Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese method of healing. It involves the insertion of fine needles into the skin. The traditional theory is that in a healthy body, the flow of energy (Qi) is normal and balanced. Stagnation or blockage to this flow of Qi can be the cause of pain, stiffness, injury and/or disability. By inserting needles at specific acupoints, the flow is restored and healing promoted.

Additional to this, Acupuncture as practiced in Westernised society, is based on pain modulation through the release of pain inhibiting pathways and pain relieving chemicals called endorphins. These are thought to assist and benefit the healing process.

Research suggests that Acupuncture works in approximately 70-80% of people. Acupuncture will therefore not work for everyone and not for every type of condition especially longer term disability, but good responders tend to include the elderly, the young and sporting population. As acupuncture works in an accumulative way, patients can usually expect to see benefits after about four treatments but this can vary depending on individuals. Acupuncture works best as an adjunct to a specific exercise programme advised by the therapist.

Acupuncture as practiced by members of Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP) is a safe procedure, has few side effects and is approved by National Blood Transfusion Service. Single-use and sterilised needles are used. Members are trained to a high level/conduct of practice and are committed to ongoing training and education to maintain their membership. Patients will receive a full explanation of the proposed treatment and will be required to give written and verbal consent prior to treatment.
